Swinomish Police Department
Swinomish Reserve Officer Program
The Swinomish Police Department has a Reserve Officer program. Reserve Officers are dedicated people who volunteer
hundreds of hours in training time and volunteer road time performing the duties of patrol officers. A person interested in becoming a reserve officer starts the process by submitting an application to the department.
The selection process includes a written test, physical agility test, background investigation and a polygraph test.
An applicant can be disqualified at any one of these stages. If the applicant is selected to become a Reserve Officer,
the department will sponsor the applicant at a Reserve Officer Academy, which are put on at different locations around
the state from time to time. The new officer will be issued uniforms and equipment. Once the applicant passes the Reserve
Academy, the applicant is eligible to ride along with the full time officers to get some on the job training. Reserve
Officers are required to put in sixteen hours (16) a month. As the new Reserve Officer gets more experience, he or she
will have the opportunity to take out the patrol car set aside for Reserve Officers. With more experience, a Reserve
Officer is eligible to cover shifts, as the need arises, for pay.
